Veterinary Physiotherapy and Canine Conditioning Coaching serve different purposes but both contribute to a dog’s physical well-being. Veterinary Physiotherapy focuses on
the rehabilitation and recovery of dogs with injuries, surgery, or medical conditions. Working alongside a veterinarian, physiotherapists use treatments like massage, joint mobilisation, and electro-therapies to reduce pain and improve mobility.
Canine Conditioning Coaching, on the other hand, is about proactively enhancing a dog’s fitness and performance. Canine Conditioning Coaches, help dogs build strength, flexibility, and stamina through tailored exercises and routines. The goal is to keep dogs healthy, prevent injuries, and optimise physical performance. While a vet referral isn’t required for Canine Conditioning sessions, your Canine Conditioning Coach will still work alongside your dogs vet to ensure the highest standard of care and safety for your dog.
While physiotherapy addresses recovery, conditioning coaching is all about maintaining and improving fitness for a long, active life.
Canine conditioning sessions are essential for improving your dog’s overall health, fitness, and well-being. Just like humans, dogs need regular physical activity to stay strong, mobile, and injury-free. Conditioning sessions help build strength, enhance flexibility, improve coordination, and boost stamina, which can prevent injuries, support recovery, and optimise your dog’s physical performance.
Whether your dog is an athlete, a working dog, or simply a family pet, conditioning sessions provide tailored exercises that address their specific needs, promoting a healthier and more active lifestyle.
These sessions are especially beneficial for puppies to ensure proper development, older dogs to maintain mobility, and dogs needing to regain strength post injury. By proactively improving their fitness, you’re setting your dog up for a long, healthy, and active life.
Canine conditioning can help improve your dog’s overall well-being and physical performance in a variety of ways. Specifically, it can assist with:
1. Core Stability: Conditioning exercises strengthen your dog’s core muscles, providing better support for their spine and improving overall body stability, which is essential for everyday movement and injury prevention.
2. Balance, Coordination & Proprioception: Conditioning helps enhance your dog’s ability to maintain balance, improve coordination, and develop proprioception (awareness of their body in space). These skills are crucial for both athletic performance and preventing falls or missteps.
3. Strength: By focusing on targeted exercises, conditioning builds muscle strength throughout your dog’s body, improving their ability to move efficiently and perform physical tasks, while also supporting joint health and stability.
4. Flexibility: Regular conditioning exercises promote flexibility, helping your dog maintain a full range of motion in their joints and muscles. This can reduce stiffness and improve overall movement.
5. Mental Ability: Canine conditioning isn’t just physical—it also provides mental stimulation. By learning and mastering new exercises, your dog’s cognitive function is engaged, which can enhance focus, problem-solving skills, and confidence.
6. Neural Pathway Development: Conditioning promotes the development of strong neural pathways, which helps your dog improve movement patterns, coordination, and responsiveness. This leads to more efficient and effective physical performance.
7. Cardiovascular Fitness: Regular conditioning exercises improve your dog’s cardiovascular health by enhancing their stamina and endurance. This helps them maintain energy levels for longer periods and supports overall health and vitality.
8. Addressing Muscle Imbalances: Conditioning helps identify and correct muscle imbalances by strengthening weaker muscle groups and stretching overdeveloped areas. This promotes better overall symmetry, improves posture, and reduces the risk of strain or injury due to uneven muscle use.
Overall, canine conditioning helps maintain a healthy, balanced dog, ensuring they enjoy an active, injury-free life at any age.
Generally, you do not need a vet referral to start canine conditioning. However, your Canine Conditioning Coach may request a referral if there are any red flags or concerns regarding your dog’s medical health during the assessment process. This ensures the highest level of safety and care for your dog.
The assessment forms help identify any potential issues that could impact your dog’s ability to safely participate in conditioning exercises. If a referral is needed, Peak Canine Performance can assist in providing and processing the vet referral form for you.
Additionally, your coach works closely with your dog’s veterinary team and other members of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to ensure that all exercises are appropriate and beneficial for your dog’s specific needs.
